1. Let's create a streamer. The surface for partially fixing is defined to a cylindrical object. Also, the surface of the section to move is divided in two separate surfaces on the right and the left, side 1 and side 2. See Nobori1.lwo.

2. Load the flag object nobori1.lwo from Layout
and execute LW_MotionDesigner. Select nobori1.lwo from the Object
panel, and make it the Target.
3. Set the parameters required for each surface
on the Surface panel. Set the same Spring (spring coefficient) for
side 1, side 2 and fix, and set a value of 1000 (difficult to
stretch) for Sub-Structure. Also, set a value of 10% for both
Stretch Limit and Compress Stress to prevent the cloth from stretching
like rubber. This makes the flag a flexible material. Then,
set the fixed section to Fixed with the same settings.
4. However, this is not enough to obtain a
satisfactory result because the cylindrical cloths cross each
other. Switch Self Collision ON and execute the self-collision
operation.
At this time, it takes much time to create
the animation due to the increased calculations required if Self Collision
is switched to ON for both side 1 and side 2. Therefore, only
switch Self Collision ON for side 1 and only switch Collision
Detection ON for side 2. This can minimize the calculation burden
of the collision operation executed between the points of side
1 and the polygons of side 2. For your reference, the following
is a comparison between the calculation time when Self Collision
is optimized or not.

5. Let's set the wind and the gravity on the Env
panel. Specify the vectors of Wind 1 and Wind 2 refering to the
picture, and then change the Wind Mode to Cycle. Then, generate
the turbulence in the Z direction in a 2 m cycle. The
scene file of the settings from 2 to 5 above is mdc12.lws.
6. Let's execute the calculation. If you are satisfied with the result, save the data in a file. Choose the filename by the SAVE MDD button and save the data.
7. Go back to Layout and open the Object properties panel. Select MD_Plug as the displacement map plug-in, and load the saved file.
8. Manipulating the time slider should animate the flag. Now render as you desire.
